Work Skills and What You Need to Know About Being a Plain Language Translator Print
Work Skills and What You Need to Know About Being a Plain Language Translator
Description

To develop a training ground for persons with developmental disabilities who are transitioning from high school to the workforce. The primary objective is twofold:

  1. to provide some of the basic employment skills that employers look for in a successful employee such as punctuality and communication, that would be essential in further work experience;
  2. specific training and work experience as a plain language translator, working on such skills as working together as a group, self-esteem, and self-confidence, among other things. In addition, for those who wish to explore alternate job opportunities after the training and work experience, they will be able to use the skills gained through the program in various positions, increasing their employability.

A second objective of the project is to increase the pool of plain language translators available, thereby increasing the ability to produce plain language resources. Plain language resources increases the accessibility of information related to daily living activities and issues that arise. This accessibility of information empowers persons with developmental disabilities to make their own, informed decisions, enabling them to be more independent.
