The Plain Language Process at The VRRI
How do we make Plain Language resources at The VRRI?
Once we have chosen a topic, there are 3 steps we follow:
- Research the topic to find key points.
- Organize the information in a logical manner. This includes writing the information at the predetermined reading level, and placing clear, representative images throughout the information to help readers understand the concepts.
- The plain language information is taken to the plain language translators to help us edit the information.
How do we do Plain Language Translation?
Our translation approach is successful because our translators are part of the group of people who will be using the information. We hire translators from the target audience (e.g., persons with developmental disabilities) who work with the facilitator to:
- read the information and pick out words that are difficult to understand,
- suggest easier words or phrases, and
- assess the suitability of the graphics accompanying the text.
Based on their suggestions and comments, we edit the information. We then bring the updated information back to the translators to get their final approval.
Using this approach, we’ve been able to successfully translate information on a variety of topics such as employment, health, sexuality, and public policy or programs.
