The VRRI Research Department’s mandate is to conduct high quality,
innovative and community-driven research. Our mandate and affiliation with
the University of Calgary set us apart
from other organizations providing services to persons with developmental
disabilities in Alberta. Our customized Research Services are supported by our:
Research Services
Research is an integral part of the VRRI. Since 1969, our multidisciplinary
research has enhanced the quality of life of persons with disabilities by:
- evaluating the effectiveness of rehabilitation services and programs
- identifying innovative theory and practices to help implement new service directions
- contributing to the development of cutting-edge public policy
We have an international reputation for producing research that is
responsive to the needs of people with developmental disabilities and
rehabilitation services. We conduct our research in close partnership with
all stakeholders. Whether you are a self-advocate, caregiver, service
provider or policy maker, we will use a participatory approach to assess
your research needs and customize the research to suit your budget.
Based on ongoing consultations with our stakeholders across Alberta, we have
identified the following areas on which to focus our research and
plain language activities:
- Health and disabilities: Issues related to health and wellness,
complex needs and specific disorders, e.g., FASD, autism, dual diagnosis
- Social inclusion: Topics related to social justice, legal rights,
advocacy, citizenship and inclusion of persons with disabilities
- Life-cycle transitions: Research on service planning and delivery
for individuals experiencing various stages of the life-cycle, e.g., youth
to adult services, education to work, retirement planning, death, and
bereavement
- Organizational management: Topics addressing management and
administration of disability services; current focus is on human resource
issues, e.g., workforce retention, succession planning, and leadership
development
