CALGARY COUNCIL ON AGING INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (C.A.I.D.)


The Calgary Council on Aging for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities is a coalition of major stakeholders representing the interests of individuals with disabilities who are aging. Major stakeholders include: aging individuals with disabilities, their families, guardians, advocates, service providers, funders and other relevant members from the community. We believe that aging individuals with disabilities can make valuable contributions to their community and it is our mission to the support them to become members of their community with equal opportunity for full participation.

Our Goals


Our Tasks

To provide stakeholders with an opportunity to meet on a regular basis to discuss and share information in regards to issues related to aging, aging individuals with disabilities, training opportunities and the availability of services to meet the needs of the individuals they support.,

To identify common areas of concern in relationship to the aging process and the type of support the individuals will require as their needs change due to aging.

To develop at this time, a general profile of an aging individual with a development disability that is reflective of the issues related to their changing needs and the planning considerations required to be able to effectively plan services to meet these needs.

To research, collect and organize information with the purpose of helping stakeholders develop a more informed understanding of the seniors services available to them in their community.

To create a dialogue with educators (eg. University of Calgary, Mount Royal College and Alberta Vocational College, etc.), so educators can better understand the changing needs of aging individuals with disabilities and the type of education required for their students to be prepared to work effectively with these people.

To provide stakeholders with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the issues pertaining to aging and aging individuals with disabilities by offering them an opportunity to listen to guest speakers from a variety of sources (e.g. individuals, families, service providers, funders and educators).

To meet with representatives from generic seniors services community to share information about the similarities between disabled and non disabled seniors.

To encourage the involvement of a representative(s) from the generic seniors service community to sit on the Calgary Council on Aging for Individuals with Disabilities.

Sharing information with stakeholders in regards to policy and regulation changes that will impact aging individuals with disabilities.

To work in conjunction with other councils and community organizations to advocate for aging individuals with disabilities (ie. Calgary Residential Services Council, Calgary Vocational and Day Alternatives Council).

To provide feedback to appropriate persons and groups (eg. Regional Partnership Council's Advisory Committee) as funding and service provision issues impact aging individuals with disabilities.
